Finding my way..

March 20th, 2009

So after my horrible tilt/downswing, I have once again decided to switch back to STT to get my confidence back again. I really think I need to stay with what I feel best at. My cash game clearly has major leaks in it that I need to work on, but until I can build myself up a substantial bankroll, I’m taking the step back to SNG’s.

SNGs so far are going good ( over a very small sample ), but already I feel my confidence coming back as this is a game/format I am comfortable and familiar with. I hope things continue to go well for me.

I have dropped my cash game 100% out of the equation for now and am going to spending the next little while grinding out the micro limit sng’s. wish me luck.

Total Discouragement / Downswing Tilt

March 17th, 2009

The title says it all, here is are my results at 10NL over 22.5K hands. I think it is time to re-evaluate my game plan. I may need to go back to my bread and butter ( STT/MTT ) to boost my confidence levels again. I am not going to lie, the last 3000-4000 hands in this graph are sub optimal play on my part. I spewed a lot of buy-ins unconsciously on semi-tilt. I am very frustrated right now. The dollar amount is insignificant, It is my performance that is discouraging.

I will say I have taken some horrific coolers and the cards have been far from friendly to me, but I am not using this as an excuse. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON I should take a 20 buy-in down swing over 8000 hands, at least I don’t think there is?? Has anyone taken this kind of downswing and simply attributed it to bad cards? I’m pretty sure that is not the case.

Discouragement…..here is the graph;

Good or Bad? Part #1

March 4th, 2009

I am going to post some key hand histories that I have marked over the last 15,000 hands at 10 NL 6-max. I would like to get peoples opinions on the way the hand played out and if they think my line was good, ok or bad. I will also include my thought process as they play out…any input would be appreciated. I am also going to post this entry on 2+2 micro stakes forum to get more feedback.

Hand # 1
Villain is 36/7/5 over 20.

MP: $5.90
Hero (CO): $10.60
BTN: $10.05
SB: $8.90
BB: $10.00
UTG: $12.65

Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero is CO with AA of clubs QQ of diamonds
1 fold, MP calls $0.10, Hero raises to $0.40, 3 folds, MP raises to $1.30, Hero calls $0.90

Flop: ($2.75) JJ of clubs 22 of clubs 99 of spades (2 players)
MP bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

Turn: ($3.75) 33 of clubs (2 players)
MP bets $1, Hero calls $1

River: ($5.75) 33 of hearts (2 players)
MP bets $1, Hero folds

Final Pot: $5.75
MP wins $5.50
(Rake: $0.25)

Thoughts : 4x raise here in CO is pretty standard for me with an AQo. I would make this raise with any hand down to about KQo and any pair in an unopened pot.

Question(s): On the flop, should I be re-raising the bet here in most situations ( without knowing opp. cbet % ) to find out where I am? Is calling here simply a bad leak? ( I have possible flush and straight redraws on turn… )

Hand # 2

BTN: $5.70
SB: $12.10
BB: $6.95
Hero (UTG): $21.15
MP: $10.55
CO: $11.95

Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero is UTG with JJ of clubs JJ of hearts
Hero raises to $0.40, 2 folds, BTN calls $0.40, SB calls $0.35, BB raises to $1.60, Hero calls $1.20, BTN calls $1.20, SB calls $1.20

Flop: ($6.40) QQ of hearts 99 of clubs 77 of diamonds (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks, BTN checks

Turn: ($6.40) QQ of spades (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $2.25, BTN folds, SB folds, BB folds

Final Pot: $6.40
Hero mucks JJ of clubs JJ of hearts
Hero wins $6.10
(Rake: $0.30)

Thoughts: Pre-flop I think I can correctly make this call here getting over 2 to 1 on my money. With 2 players yet to call the re-raise, it is also safe to assume one of them will call , which ialso increases the value of calling.

With 4 players to the flop, the action is checked around and did not feel comfortable making the pot any bigger with this many players in the hand and having a pair under the Q. Someone can easily be trying to trap with hands like AA,KK and AQ.

Question(s): Given the texture of the flop and post-flop action, I do not put any of my opponents on a drawing hand or the Q. My table image at the time was very tight and since it appeared noone wanted this pot, I felt compelled to bet. Does the saying ‘ Weak means strong ‘ apply here? Or am I setting myself up too often for a trap or bluff attempt?

After the turn Q pairs the board and action is checked to me, am I completely out of line in putting in such a small bet?

The Mookie - Calling out all bloggers!

February 25th, 2009

As posted in Comments on Mookie99’s blog

You might not all know me, but I have been a long time reader of all you poker bloggers out there.

I have recently (2months ago) redone/restarted my own personal blog which details my micro stake struggles of online poker, along with other useless paraphernalia . My blog was started as more of a personal venture to reflect on, so don’t expect any ground breaking material to emerge from it.

So in true blogger spirit, I will be playing The Mookie tonight ( My first blogger tournament )  and will be offering a single 10$ last longer bet to any blogger out who wants to try and outlast me! Sounds like an easy 10$? Your probably right!

Whoever is interested ,just add me to msn josh (at) drawflush (d0t) com and throw me an offer ;o)  - http://www.drawflush.com

I do not do enough of this….

February 24th, 2009

1. I do not play my position to it’s full advantage
2. I play too timid on turn and river, even when player statistics dictate to play otherwise.
3. Tell a consistent story throughout my line of approach

Just posting a hand example to re-emphasis the power of aggression, position and consistency with your approach.

Villain has a 80% steal percentage over a small sample of 30 + hands and a continuation bet factor of 100%. So I went with a story and stuck to it. He clearly looked weak/drawish after the turn, hence my 3rd bullet.

Don Ross & Brooke Miller - Tonight!

February 18th, 2009

Don Ross is a Master guitarist who turns his guitar into an entire band, he’s melodic, rythmic and intense.  His wife Brooke Miller is also a very talented singer and song writer. He was in town about a year ago and I was dissapointed as I missed the show. I have yet to see him live, but have watched every possible youtube video I could find on the guy.

A few weeks ago I was browsing the Capitol Theatre website (local theatre) as Is my normal routine about once every couple weeks and there it was in all its glory ‘ Don Ross & Brooke Miller - Live, February 18th @ 8:00pm ‘ .  I decided I cannot miss this show.  So I took off to the box office and bought 4 tickets.

So tonight, I’ll be bringing along Melanie and my parents and will be going to see this wonder of the world, I can’t wait !  Here’s a youtube clip for your enjoyement. Maybe i’ll post a review tommorow.
